Our ‘Future City’

COMPACTING PARKING

As cities become more densely populated and space becomes ever more scarce, we need to continually develop new parking concepts and be creative in how we use existing space.

Our flexible parking systems have been designed with these requirements in mind and can be used in a variety of different ways, opening up new, intelligent possibilities for re-purposing usable space in the city.

MORE INFORMATION

Living or working in a densely built-up quarter of a large city usually means that parking is going to be difficult.

The search for a parking space alone can take up to half an hour or more every day, often resulting in having to park a good distance away from you destination and then having to walk. Parking can be a stressful experience and one that’s also harmful to the environment in terms of additional vehicle emissions, wasted fuel and congestion.

This situation is likely to only get worse: traffic volumes are increasing, cars are getting bigger and wider, and so the quality of life in our towns and cities continues to decline.

CONVENTIONAL PARKING v FULLY AUTOMATED PARKING SYSTEM

So what are the alternatives that could improve the parking situation in very densely populated areas? Ultimately, local authorities, property owners and planners have only two alternative options:

This approach may be more fragmented, but usually takes much less time from the decision to the start of construction, as fewer decision-makers are involved. Parking is also spread out according to demand, resulting in reduced congestion and emissions.

With Wohr parking solutions, new spaces can be created in residential, public and commercial premises. The parking capacity of existing multi-storey and underground car parks can also be extended without the need for additional space.

With centralised car parks, many additional parking spaces can be created. The problem is though that suitable sites must first be found, ownership must be clarified, possible contaminated sites must be identified, existing water, electricity and communication lines must be re-routed, and existing buildings must be demolished.

That can take years.

After that, there will likely be a noisy construction site in the neighbourhood for a long period of time. Not an optimal solution, from a planning, economic, sustainability or a driver’s point of view.

Compared to conventional underground parking, automatic parking systems offer several  advantages in addition to space saving. The biggest advantage for users is the constant availability of a parking space and the rapid removal and retrieval of the vehicle.

One of our projects which was designed in line with this concept, is the Donnersberger Straße in Munich. 284 underground parking spaces are available for residents, with cars able to be left for parking in any of four transfer stations.

SUCCESSFUL PROJECTS WORLDWIDE

In the centre of Madrid, a fully automatic Wohr Multiparker 740 system contributes to the reduced ecological footprint of the Montalbán 11 building.

Sustainability was the top priority in the comprehensive redesign, from energy efficiency to the use of environmentally friendly materials and integration into the local ecosystem. The fact that Montalbán 11 carries a BREEAM Very Good certificate for particularly environmentally friendly buildings is in part due to the installation of the fully automatic Wohr Multiparker system.

As part of the renovation of this former bank in the heart of The Hague in the Netherlands, Wohr installed a Parksafe 583 parking system, perfectly hidden behind glass.

With 52 parking spaces on nine above-ground levels and an area of only around 135 m², the fully automatic car parking system offers convenient, secure parking within a very confined space.

High-quality flats and 320 parking spaces provided by Wohr’s Parksafe 582/583 system have been built on the Gran Via boulevard in Madrid.

In the long and very narrow building, which would not accommodate the construction of a conventional underground car park, drivers use one of five transfer cabins to park their car.

Versatile and durable, Parklift is available in more than ten basic configurations – including two and three level, single and double width variants. With either dependent or independent access to each car, and a number of weight capacities and finish options, the low-maintenance, cost-effective Parklift system is ideal for virtually any application, both indoor and outdoor.

Based on vertical storage rack principles, ParkSafe systems park vehicles onto storage ‘shelves’ to the right or left of the entrance vertical lift up to three adjacent rows at each side. Customisable to meet each projects’ requirements, ParkSafe can be configured as an above ground tower, or a below ground shaft system – or indeed a tower/shaft combination. Rotation is also possible.
